It was June 2003 and a joint Conference was held in Madrid by the Antarctic Investigation Scientific Committe and the Scientific Union International Council
The first international polar meeting was started by an Austrian that organized an expedition during the period between 1872 and 1874,

The first polar year took place during the years 1882/1883, the second during 1922/1923, the third during 1957/1958 and the actual one is the fourth IPY.

>From a scientific point of view the polar year will involve a huge investigation campaign on all the items that have a connection with the poles. It has also the aim of soliciting interest towards the scientific research made by the polar bases, including the italian base "Mario Zucchelli" and in the meantime to give emphasis on all the environment problems that today we are creating.

Scientists are already aware that the production of toxic gas, like CO2, by the industrial world, cars and fuels like oil, results in an increase of the worldwide global temperature with the risk of destruction of the poles, if not the world itself.

All nations have signed, in Kyoto, an agreement to reduce the productions of dangerous emissions and to increase the use of new and clean sources of energy, but not much has been done.

We hope that this International Polar Year will give some results and also the Radio Amateurs are taking part to it with this nice award being fully sensibilized to respect our world.

We hope you all will get in touch with our IPY stations.
