DP0GVN, Neumayer II Station still active Print E-mail

Neumayer Base logo/locationHello,

I just wanted to let you know that DP0GVN is still active. This summer may very well be the last chance to work the German Antarctic base "Neumayer II" (WAP DEU-02, AA DL-03) as the base is scheduled to close in February 2009, and there will be no radio amateur on the wintering team 2008.

The sea ice is unusually thick for this time of the year, so our supply vessel "Naja Arctica" which carries most of the construction material for the planned new station "Neumayer III" has still not been able to unload at the edge of the ice shelf. Part of our cargo has been pulled to the station over the sea ice, but we need direct access to the ship from the ice shelf to unload the heavy construction machinery. We are currently getting help from the German research vessel "Polarstern" which tries to break a navigation channel into the sea ice, so we are optimistic that unloading of the vessel and construction of the new station can commence soon. If you're interested in finding out how things are progressing, please check our status reports at http://tinyurl.com/26dq8c

Meanwhile, there are three operators at "Neumayer II" who are regularly active in their spare time as DP0GVN. Our main times of activity are daily between 1800 UTC and 2200 UTC, usually on 20m, 30m or 40m. Operators are Mirko (DG9BHQ), Torsten (DL1TOG), and myself (Felix, DL5XL). I prefer CW while the other two mainly work SSB. All three operators will have left the station by March 10, 2008. There are already approximately 2,000 contacts in the DP0GVN logbook of December 2007 and January 2008.

The QSL route for all DP0GVN QSOs after 2006 is DL5EBE, direct or via the bureau. There is an online log check for all contacts of this summer season available at http://www.rrdxa.eu/log (just enter your call sign)!

Additionally, the QSOs will be uploaded to ARRL's Logbook of the World.
