News, Polar News, International Polar Day: 'People at the Poles'

Dear Friends of forum

This is to invite all the special station IPY to participe at the special Polar event of next September 24th. It will be enough to say "International Polar Day Celebration" and be actif at least 2 hours.

...the Canadian IPY Secretariat and the Canadian IPY Network will be developing and organizing the upcoming "People at the Poles' International Polar Day on September 24, 2008.
http://www.ipy.org/index.php?/ipy/detail/international_polar_days/
In past Polar Days the medium used for the live events has been webinars and/or video/tele-conferencing. With the September Polar Day being focused on the human dimension of the polar regions we wanted to incorporate the use of radio in the hosting of a series of live events across the globe to highlight one of the oldest and most consistent forms of communication in the polar regions. We also want to ensure that polar communities have access to participate and engage in the live events for People Polar Day....

Beyond the use of radio stations we would like to engage the ham radio community but I am unsure of exactly how (mostly because I am not aware of the technology that connects or does not connect those two mediums of radio).
International Polar Day: 'People at the Poles' Radio based live event Planning

On September 24th the international IPY community will celebrate the human dimensions of IPY. This is the first ever IPY to include the human health, social, political, and economic aspects of the polar regions in its research program and to engage polar communities in research development, implementation and dissemination.

Canada was instrumental in encouraging the inclusion of the human dimension in IPY 2007-2008 and we will lead the organization and development of the September Polar Day activities.

We have created working groups to organize the different events during the People Polar Day and one of those groups is specifically organizing the development of the live radio events for September 24th.

We are hoping to engage radio stations (from a total of three time zones- see below) that would organize and host their own 2 hour show and content to highlight the health, social, political and economic research that is being conducted as well as the cultural aspects of the polar regions and community involvement in IPY.

Projected Time Zones for Radio Events

  1. midday Europe
  2. midday in North America (**CKLB will cover this with a time that works for east and west coast)
  3. midday for Asia (including Australia)

We have a North American based indigenous radio station (CKLB) that will serve as the hub for the North American time zone and also for web streaming programming from the other time zones. We are seeking interested radio stations to serve as hubs for the programming for midday Europe and midday Asia/Australia.

We are currently developing a skeleton framework of what the 2 hours of programming could cover to provide some consistency between time zones but we would also welcome ideas and contributions from the hubs to develop a program that reflects the theme of the day (People and Human Dimension of IPY) as well as the uniqueness of the region.

The 'format and framework' for the program might highlight:

  • segments on regional community involvement in IPY
  • interviews with IPY human and social based researchers the broader region
  • Call in options for the public to pose questions to the scientists
  • Cultural/human aspects from the region
  • Possible links with segments/radio stations from other time zones or regional radio stations

We need to secure interest and commitments from radio stations very quickly so if you are interested in hosting the European or Asia/Australian host please contact:
